Which Gynecological Infections Can Affect Fertility? Mexico Surrogacy Guide

During family planning, some women may have no obvious discomfort but discover gynecological inflammation or reproductive health issues during fertility evaluations. For intended parents considering surrogacy, understanding these conditions is equally important.

Surrogacy does not mean that the egg provider’s reproductive health can be overlooked. If using their own eggs, ovarian function, egg retrieval considerations, and a history of uterine or fallopian tube conditions may still affect preliminary evaluations and treatment planning. If an active infection is present, doctors typically need to assess its type, severity, and the appropriate timing of treatment before determining the next steps.

 1. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Watch for Fallopian Tube Damage

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection-related inflammation affecting the upper female reproductive tract and surrounding tissues. It may involve the endometrium, fallopian tubes, and tissues around the ovaries. Some patients experience lower abdominal pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, fever, or pain during intercourse, while others have few noticeable symptoms.

If inflammation recurs or treatment is delayed, it may cause scarring, adhesions, or blockage of the fallopian tubes, increasing the risk of difficulty conceiving naturally and ectopic pregnancy.

 2. Endometritis: Pay Attention to the Uterine Environment

Endometritis is inflammation of the endometrium, or uterine lining. It can be acute, chronic, or take other forms. Some patients may experience abnormal uterine bleeding, lower abdominal discomfort, or unusual discharge, while others have no typical symptoms.

Chronic endometritis has been associated with certain unfavorable reproductive outcomes, but symptoms or a single test result alone cannot establish it as the cause of infertility or failed embryo implantation. Whether further testing is necessary generally depends on medical history, ultrasound findings, and reproductive history. When appropriate, a doctor may recommend uterine cavity evaluation or endometrial sampling. If a problem is identified, the doctor should determine the treatment plan and follow-up schedule.

 3. Cervicitis and Vaginitis: They Are Not the Same Condition

Cervicitis may be associated with infection by specific pathogens or caused by other factors. Vaginitis includes different conditions, such as bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis. These conditions may cause similar symptoms, including increased discharge, unusual odor, itching, or burning, but their treatments differ.

Not all cases of vaginitis directly cause infertility. However, some infections may spread to the upper reproductive tract or affect reproductive health during family planning. Anyone experiencing persistent or recurrent symptoms, or who may be at risk of a sexually transmitted infection, should seek medical care and appropriate testing. Avoid prolonged self-treatment with antibiotics or vaginal medications, as this may delay diagnosis or complicate further evaluation.

There is no need to become overwhelmed by a single abnormal test result during family planning. The priorities are to establish an accurate diagnosis, address treatable conditions, and determine the next steps based on the findings. For intended parents exploring surrogacy in Mexico, understanding their reproductive health can make subsequent medical discussions more informed.
