But when people first learn about egg freezing, a common question is: What is the difference between a frozen egg after thawing and an egg naturally released during a woman’s menstrual cycle? What Happens to an Egg After Frozen Egg Thawing?

 

Egg freezing does not mean putting an egg into a “permanent pause” and then simply returning it to its original state. In modern assisted reproduction, mature eggs are typically preserved using vitrification. When they are needed, the laboratory warms them according to established procedures, allowing the eggs to return to a state suitable for subsequent procedures.

 

During a normal ovulation cycle, a mature egg is released from the ovary and enters the fallopian tube, where it waits for fertilization at the appropriate time. With egg freezing, however, the mature egg is retrieved before ovulation through an egg retrieval procedure and then cryopreserved in the laboratory. Therefore, the biggest difference between the two is not that the “egg quality is completely different,” but that the environment in which the egg exists and the subsequent method of fertilization are different.

 

What Determines How Frozen Eggs May Perform in the Future?

 

It is not enough to look only at the thawing process when considering how frozen eggs may perform in the future.

 

The woman’s age at the time of egg freezing, ovarian function, the number of mature eggs obtained, and the quality of the eggs themselves can all affect subsequent outcomes. Age is particularly important because as women age, it can affect not only the number of eggs but also the rate of chromosomally normal eggs.

 

After an egg is thawed, its condition needs to be assessed first, followed by fertilization through ICSI. The resulting embryos continue to be cultured in the laboratory and gradually develop. Some treatment plans may also include genetic testing of embryos, after which the embryo transfer plan is developed based on the embryo’s condition.

 

What Is the Difference Between Natural Ovulation and Frozen Egg Thawing?

 

Simply put, natural ovulation involves a mature egg being released within the body and waiting for fertilization. With frozen eggs, the mature eggs are retrieved in advance, cryopreserved, and later warmed so they can continue through the assisted reproduction process.

 

The two cannot simply be judged in terms of “which is better.” For intended parents, it is more important to consider the woman’s age and egg condition at the time of freezing, the cryopreservation technology used, survival after warming, and subsequent fertilization and embryo development.

 

A thawed frozen egg and a mature egg naturally released through ovulation are both mature egg cells in essence, but they have undergone different processes. Frozen eggs go through retrieval, freezing, storage, and warming before entering the fertilization and embryo culture stages.
